What is a general project manager?

General PMs excel at schedule management, budget control, stakeholder coordination, contract administration, risk identification, and quality oversight. They are ideal for office renovations, standard retail or warehouse construction, conventional commercial buildings, and projects with standard mechanical systems. Their limitation: they typically cannot independently evaluate vibration isolation requirements, acoustic calculations, MEP design adequacy, seismic restraint compliance, or cleanroom classifications.

What is a technical project manager?

A technical PM combines all general PM skills with engineering expertise — reading complex engineering drawings, evaluating equipment specifications, assessing compliance with technical codes (SMACNA, ASHRAE, NJUCC), analyzing vibration, acoustic, and seismic requirements, and coordinating MEP systems with 3D modeling. They are essential for manufacturing facilities, cleanrooms, vibration-sensitive installations, mission-critical facilities, and strict regulatory environments.
